The Joy Of Reading

Boys_reading_001

During my years of being a WeJoySing instructor, I have often been asked if I have a favorite song or activity from our classes.  It's so hard to choose!   But I have to say, many of my favorite moments have come when I get to sit down with a book and read it to my kids.  It is such a joy to see their excitement as they come running to sit in their "special spots" around me - sometimes that spot is in my lap, which is a special treat since my own boys do not really fit in my lap anymore!   I especially love it when my little ones try to "help" me turn the pages because they want to see more!

Fostering a love of reading at an early age is such a gift to your child.  Spending that quality time together will show your child that reading is a skill worth learning.  According to a recent article from Kidshealth.org, the more stories you read aloud, the more words your child will be exposed to, and the better he or she will be able to talk!   Did you know that reading aloud to your baby:

  • teaches a baby about communication
  • introduces concepts such as stories, numbers, letters, colors, and shapes in a fun way
  • builds listening, memory, and vocabulary skills
  • gives babies information about the world around them

Reading a bedtime story is so much more than just getting your child settled for the night!   It opens up new worlds to them, and offers them more than just snuggle time with mom or dad.   I have always loved reading to my own boys, starting when we brought them home from the hospital as newborns.   I actually spent a whole year reading the Harry Potter series out loud to my oldest son, who was 9 at the time.   There were seven very long, very intricate books!  But it opened up a great dialogue between my son and I, and took his imagination to wonderful places!   When my second son came along, my oldest loved to read to him - the picture shown is my boys cuddled together reading, and was taken about 7 years ago.

So even if your infant is still more interested in chewing on the book than looking at it, take the time to read, and be as silly and expressive as you like!   Your child will learn so much!

"Toys away, toys away, time to put the toys away."

Clip_image001

“Toys away, toys away, time to put the toys away.”

In our WeJoySing classes, we sing this familiar song while we are putting our instruments away.  By singing, the task becomes a game for your child.  What child doesn’t want to play a game…..especially when everyone around celebrates in thunderous applause when they  complete the task? Parents (and grandparents) are amazed how, by singing this simple song, their child does exactly what the song tells them to do.  It truly is a “magical” song!

In Willem’s house (pictured here with his mother), Willem’s older brother quickly understood the “POWER” of “the song.”  When it is time for him to pick up his toys, he starts to sing, “Toys away, toys away, time to put the toys away.” When Willem hears his brother singing “the song,” he quickly comes in and cleans up the toys while his older brother sits and watches!  His mother didn’t hesitate to inform him, that “the song” was not intended to make Willem do all his work.

So, if you need a little help around the house this week, just sing……. :)

WeJoySing at Home

Some of the must fun I’ve had with WeJoySing has been with my nephews, Jason and Evan. Now three and two years old, both have been in several WeJoySing classes with their mom, dad, and now grandma! Fortunately for me, I’ve also been able to see them in class several times on Monday mornings with Mrs. Lynnette.

WeJoySing for us, however, doesn’t stop when we leave class. The whole family has found times when bounces, wiggles, tickles, etc. are both fun as well as useful. We’ve used them at home, at restaurants, at church (quietly!), really any place where we might need something fun to do. It’s like having an extra bag of tricks when the two year old next to you might just start to get a little out of control if the food doesn’t come soon. So yes, wiggles at the table have worked!

This winter session in the infant classes we have been doing a bounce called “Let’s Go Riding Together”. We bounce face-to-face and then tilt side-to-side going “this way” and “that way”. It reminded me of a video I took not too long ago of my mom and sister doing a bounce with Jason and Evan. The best part is at the very beginning. As soon as the bounce begins, both boys break out into the hugest smiles! This is something I see frequently in classes as well. Bounces are so much fun and such a great way to learn!

So, as much fun as you have in class, remember, what you’re learning is also a great tool to bring home!!

One More Week!!

Dscn0240

It's been a wonderful holiday break! I have really enjoyed spending time
with my family and enjoying our Christmas traditions. We always hide a
couple gifts, we have "The Elf on the Shelf" to keep on on our toes and my
daughter Ava enjoys dressing as an angel for the Christmas Eve church
service. It's been very nice to have my husband home for 3 weeks! But I so
miss my WeJoySing children! I can't wait until next week when my Heart
Strings classes start back up! I miss the children running to my class and
giving me hugs! I miss their excitement and anticipation! I miss seeing
their smiling faces fill up with joy as we sing, dance and play our
instruments! I can't wait to hear all about what each of you did to
celebrate over the break! Being a WeJoySing instructor is just pure joy!
Because "The More We Get Together The Happier We'll Be!"

Merry Christmas & Happy Hanukkah! Let's Dance!

It was a total delight sharing the Holiday Session with so many of you! Our babies, toddlers, and preschoolers had a great time dancing, singing, and playing through the Shoemaker's workshop. I've certainly enjoyed these photos of "little Elves" dancing in Mrs. Beth's Granville 2-3 year old class. You'll see that even the babies got in the act!! Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!
"Sing"cerely and with LOTS of La La's for all!
